Compassion for oneself in the midst of collective trauma and sadness can be a struggle. How do you balance the needs you have with what others need from you? How can we move forward each day, strengthening our hearts, minds and bodies while dealing with loss, despair and pain. Where do we gather the strength when we feel empty inside. When all around us we hear and see the insurmountable hills of never ending human suffering? For some, they are able to give it all to God, fall on their knees and pray for peace. Others meditate and strive to reach a higher consciousness from within. Some find healing and balance within nature, grounding with the earth, flowing with the waters, flying with the breeze. We may look for ways of escape… diving into books, movies, music, sports, other forms of entertainment or distraction in order to avoid dealing with the feelings that arise. The fear and anxiety may be so unbelievably debilitating that getting out of bed isn’t even an option. Wherever you are at this time is ok. I see you. I love you. If you are doing great and feeling like this is your time in life, rock on! If you are experiencing a crisis like none you have ever imagined, you are not alone. Anywhere you are at this time is your journey for the moment. But, when you take a breath, the moment shifts. Again and again, we breathe and life changes. So… compassion for oneself in the midst of collective trauma? Take a breath. Then another. Deep and long, slow and with intention. Close your eyes. Picture something that brings a smile to your face. Or allow yourself to sink into a place of stillness, where you don’t have to think at all. Breathe. Then breathe again. Know that with each breath you are connected to every living being on this planet. We are all one. We can get through the tough moments. We can help ourselves and one another heal from pain. We can rebuild our minds, hearts and bodies in a new way. With love, acceptance, support, caring and kindness. I see you. I love you. Breathe.
